Why Oakleighs kindling lights easily

Good kindling needs to be small, dry and easy to light. Oakleighs kindling is carefully prepared into manageable pieces that give your fire the fast initial flame it needs to get larger fuel burning.

What is kindling wood?

Kindling is small, dry pieces of wood used to bridge the gap between a firelighter or tinder and the larger logs that keep a fire going. Because each piece is thin and dry, it catches far more easily than a full log — the increased surface area lets flames spread quickly across the wood, building enough heat to ignite thicker fuel. Without kindling, a firelighter alone often struggles to get a large log burning; without larger logs, kindling burns out too fast to sustain a fire. Good kindling is the reliable middle step that makes lighting a fire quick and frustration-free.

How to use kindling

Place your firelighter or tinder in the centre of the fire bed and arrange several pieces of dry kindling around and above it, leaving gaps for airflow. Light the firelighter and let the kindling catch fully before adding one or two small logs — avoid smothering the fire by adding too much fuel at once. Once those logs are burning properly, gradually build the fire to the level you need.

Storage

Even properly dried kindling can absorb moisture if it's stored badly. Keep your bags undercover, away from rain and raised off damp ground where possible — a dry shed, garage or other covered storage area is normally ideal. If a bag gets wet, let it dry fully before trying to burn it.

Never run out of kindling

Frequently asked questions

What is kindling wood?+

Kindling is small, dry wood used between a firelighter or tinder and larger logs. Because the pieces are much smaller than normal firewood, they catch more easily and create the stronger flame needed to ignite larger fuel.

Is your kindling dry?+

Yes — our kindling is prepared from dry timber. See the specification table above for our verified moisture range where available.

What size are the pieces?+

See the specification table above for our current average stick length and width — as a natural timber product, individual pieces vary slightly in size and shape.

How much kindling is in a bag?+

See the specification table above for our approximate pieces-per-bag range. Individual timber pieces vary naturally, so the precise count in each bag may differ.

How much kindling do I need to start a fire?+

It depends on your appliance and fire size, but most fires only need enough kindling to build a small structure with good airflow around the firelighter — start with several dry pieces rather than packing the firebox tightly.

Can I use it in my wood burner?+

Yes — our kindling is sold for starting fires in wood-burning stoves and other suitable domestic fires. Always follow your appliance manufacturer's instructions.

Where do you deliver?+

We deliver nationwide across the UK. Delivery is free anywhere in Norfolk, and £4.95 elsewhere (free on orders over £30). See our delivery page for full details.

How should I store kindling?+

Keep bags undercover and away from rain, raised off damp ground where possible. A dry shed, garage or other covered storage area is ideal — even properly dried kindling can absorb moisture if stored badly.
